New SFP Toolkit: sustainable feed for aquaculture – The aquaculture feed industry plays a crucial role in maintaining delicate ecological balances. As the global demand for fish grows, ensuring the sustainability of feeds becomes an increasingly pressing challenge. It is in this context that the Sustainable Fisheries Partnership (SFP) has introduced its Aquaculture Feed Solutions Toolkit, a resource designed to increase transparency and promote more sustainable ingredients in aquaculture feeds.
The toolkit is a key step for the fish industry, providing companies with over 80 tools, standards and initiatives to help manage the risks associated with climate change and biodiversity loss. Leading companies such as Sainsbury’s, Tesco, Thai Union and Walmart have already set ambitious targets to improve the sustainability of feed in their products. According to Paul Bulcock, SFP’s Aquaculture Information Officer, the adoption of sustainability policies related to feed can improve the reputation of aquaculture as a low-carbon sector.
Aquaculture, which today provides more than 50 per cent of the fish products consumed worldwide, has enormous potential as a sustainable food source. However, feed remains a major contributor to environmental impacts, accounting for up to 70-80% of the carbon emissions associated with aquaculture and up to 90% of the impacts on land and water use. The Feed Solutions Toolkit offers an unprecedented aggregation of resources to help fish farms identify risks and take concrete steps to reduce these impacts.
Developed with support from the Walmart Foundation, the toolkit is part of the ‘Addressing the Carbon and Biodiversity Impacts of Aquaculture’ project, which aims to promote responsible practices at scale.
