Artificial intelligence to support the seafood sector – Chris van der Kuyl, President of Ace Aquatec recently spoke at the Responsible Seafood Summit in St Andrews, Scotland, opening an interesting debate on the potential of artificial intelligence for the entire seafood sector and especially for the aquaculture industry.
According to Van der Kuyl, AI can indeed support a sector that is considered important for global food production, but which today has to overcome great obstacles.
The entrepreneur firmly believes that with the use of AI it is possible to monitor the health of fish more accurately thanks to the use of advanced sensors and algorithms that can examine the data collected in real time so as to detect diseases early and intervene in good time so as to reduce the use of drugs and improve animal welfare. Artificial intelligence then intervenes in optimising animal feeding, managing biomass and monitoring environmental conditions.
‘We are living in an era of unprecedented change and this change will never be this slow again,’
said Van der Kuy, referring to the rapid evolution of technologies. The focus of his speech was clear: data-driven decisions are the key to a more efficient and sustainable future in aquaculture.
Speakers at the Responsible Seafood Summit, organised by the Global Seafood Alliance and co-hosted by Seafood Scotland, included experts from over 20 countries, with the sole interest of discussing the opportunities and challenges facing the global seafood industry. Central points of the meeting were the growing competition for marine space and the need to increase fish production in a sustainable manner.
