Thai Union Group revolutionises the shrimp industry – Thai Union Group announced an ambitious programme to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions within the shrimp industry. In collaboration with The Nature Conservancy (TNC) and Ahold Delhaize USA, this initiative marks a significant step towards more sustainable aquaculture practices.
The pilot programme, which will initially take place in Thailand, aims to produce 1,000 tonnes of processed shrimp with a lower environmental impact while maintaining high quality standards. These shrimp will be fully traceable from the farm to the final shipping point, ensuring transparency and accountability throughout the supply chain.
The programme aims not only to reduce carbon emissions, but also to transform the shrimp industry into a more sustainable, efficient and fair sector.
The main objective of the programme is to invest in farms to improve efficiency and productivity, reduce energy consumption and increase the supply of sustainable feed ingredients. Thai Union plans to expand these efforts to other shrimp farms in Thailand and beyond, introducing sustainable interventions to support the transition to more sustainable practices.
Ahold Delhaize USA has already shown its support for the programme, with two of its brands, Food Lion and Hannaford, agreeing to purchase shrimp from this initiative.
Thai Union Group’s shrimp decarbonisation programme is an important step towards more sustainable fish production. Through innovation, collaboration and a strong commitment to sustainability, Thai Union is poised to set a new standard for the industry, demonstrating that sustainable practices can generate economic and environmental benefits.
