EU, global standards for fisheries data sharing

EU, global standards for fisheries data sharing – As part of the growing awareness of the crucial importance of preserving and managing marine resources, the European Union has taken a significant step towards promoting sustainable fishing practices. The Directorate-General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (DG MARE) recently announced the EU’s willingness to adopt a new common global standard for the exchange of fisheries control data, a standard that enjoys the recognition of the United Nations.

This important development represents a turning point in the approach to fisheries management at the international level. The European Union is pioneering the promotion of shared regulations and protocols that will enable more effective supervision of fishing activities worldwide.

New standard recognised by the United Nations

The new standard, recognised by the United Nations, has been formulated with the aim of creating a common framework for countries and regions to share relevant and up-to-date data on fishing activities. This will provide competent authorities with detailed information on fleet sizes, fishing grounds, catches and other aspects crucial to the sustainable management of fishery resources.

So the EU’s decision to embrace this new standard is a tangible demonstration of its commitment to promoting sustainability in fisheries. With more efficient and accurate data sharing, relevant institutions will be able to monitor fishing activities more accurately, preventing overfishing and taking targeted conservation measures.

This development also marks an important step forward in harmonising global efforts to manage marine resources. The adoption of a common global standard promotes international cooperation and facilitates the sharing of knowledge and best practices between countries and regions.

Important step towards sustainability

The European Union’s decision to adopt a new common global standard for the exchange of fisheries control data, recognised by the United Nations, is an important step towards promoting sustainable fishing practices and the conservation of fishery resources worldwide. This commitment once again demonstrates the EU’s determination to lead efforts towards responsible management of our precious marine ecosystem.
