Wave energy to enhance offshore aquaculture

Wave energy to enhance offshore aquaculture – The energy from wave motion is an important clean energy resource, but its utilization is still very low. A team of researchers from the Interdisciplinary Centre of Marine and Environmental Research (CIIMAR) and the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP) has demonstrated the possibility of combining wave energy with offshore aquaculture.

The team has presented a study that suggests the ideal combination for developing sustainable offshore platforms for aquaculture along the Portuguese coast, using the energy generated by waves to meet the growing energy demand. The combination of these two resources can make aquaculture more sustainable and energy-efficient.

The team has identified the most promising locations for implementing these technologies along the Portuguese coast, focusing on Sines and Figueira da Foz, which have shown the greatest potential for utilizing wave energy. Additionally, the energy converter developed in the ATLANTIDA project, named OCECO and developed in the FEUP laboratories, has been identified as particularly efficient for this purpose.

The objective of this combination is to make offshore aquaculture more sustainable by reducing electrical energy losses through direct utilization of wave energy. This synergy between ocean energy and aquaculture can lead to greater profitability and strategic development of wave energy extraction technologies.

Wave energy linked to aquaculture can be a promising solution for developing sustainable and efficient systems along the Portuguese coast, contributing to the production of clean energy and the enhancement of the aquaculture industry.
