Côte d’Ivoire – Development of Aquaculture: Signing of a Framework Partnership Agreement between the Ministries in charge of Scientific Research and Fisheries Resources – On Monday 05 June 2023 in Abidjan-Plateau, the Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Adama Diawara, and his colleague in charge of Animal and Fisheries Resources, Sidi Tiémoko Touré, signed a framework partnership agreement aimed at strengthening collaboration in the field of aquatic ecosystem protection, aquaculture and the sustainable management of fisheries resources.
Minister Adama Diawara welcomed the signing of the agreement, which will “enable research results to be put to economic use”.
“This agreement enables us, as the Ministry of Scientific Research, to play the role assigned to us. It’s one thing to do research and produce results, and another to make the most of those results”,
said Adama Diawara.
For his part, Sidi Tiémoko Touré said that the support of the MESRS could help the MIRAH to achieve food security in terms of fish products, a sector that plays a key role in our country’s economic, social and nutritional development.
“The Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research (MESRS) has a network of research structures with proven expertise in fisheries and aquaculture research and development. The Ministry of Animal Resources and Fisheries (MIRAH) wants to benefit from the expertise of the structures under the authority of the MESRS, in particular the research results of the various universities and higher institutes and research centres such as the Oceanological Research Centre (CRO)”,
he said.
The Minister announced that the National Fisheries Management Strategy (SNGP) and the National Aquaculture Development Strategy (SNDA) should enable Côte d’Ivoire to produce 130,000 tonnes of fisheries and 150,000 tonnes of aquaculture respectively. This will increase the contribution of national production from the current 18% to around 65% of requirements by 2026.
Fish is the main source of animal protein, and its consumption has exceeded 20kg/per capita per year since 2016, despite the low level of national production, which is generally between 70,000 and 100,000 tonnes per year for an annual requirement of 650,000 tonnes/year.
