Egyptian Delegation Tours Liberia to Assess Aquaculture Potential – As Africa’s top aquaculture producer, Egypt shares its expertise with Liberia, strengthening South-South cooperation to drive sustainable fisheries and food security.
In a significant step towards boosting Liberia’s aquaculture sector, a high-level three-man Egyptian delegation toured several counties in Liberia from January 24, 2025. The delegation’s mission was to assess the country’s aquaculture needs and lay the foundation for a transformative strategy in the sector. The team visited aquaculture facilities in Grand Cape Mount, Bomi, Montserrado, Lofa, and other regions to gather first-hand information.
The Egyptian delegation was led by Dr. Ahmed Saneyeldin Mohammed Sadek, a member of the Lakes and Fish Resources Protection and Development Agency of Egypt. Accompanying him were Engineer Hany Mohammed Mabrouk Ibrahim, General Manager for Fish Resources at the Authority for Fish Resources Development, and Dr. Dawlat Ali Hassanin Mohamadin, a veterinarian from the same agency.
According to a press release from the National Fisheries and Aquaculture Authority (NaFAA), the delegation visited key aquaculture sites such as the Bong Mines Reservoir, Lake Piso, Gbedin Lowland, and Foyah Lowland in Lofa County. These visits were part of an effort to evaluate water quality, hatcheries, farms, and the overall management of aquaculture facilities.
During the welcoming ceremony at NaFAA’s Corporate Headquarters on Bushrod Island, NaFAA’s Director General, Hon. Emma Metieh Glassco, emphasized the importance of the delegation’s visit. She noted that the collaboration with Egyptian experts was vital to developing a comprehensive aquaculture strategy aimed at achieving food security and self-sufficiency.
“The Egyptian experts are here to provide us with the expertise needed for a high-level transformation in aquaculture,” Hon. Glassco stated. She also highlighted Liberia’s appreciation for the partnership with Egypt, which she said would strengthen the country’s agricultural development efforts.
In 2024, Madam Glassco signed a Memorandum of Understanding on behalf of the Liberian government with Egypt on a Technical Cooperation Agreement for the provision of Fisheries governance and Monitoring, Control, and Surveillance and Aquaculture development with an Egyptian Corporate Agency, the Lake and Fish Resources Protection and Development Agency.
Dr. Ahmed Saneyeldin Mohammed Sadek, head of the Egyptian delegation, reassured Liberia of Egypt’s commitment to the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in 2024. He stated that the delegation’s mission was to gather detailed data on Liberia’s aquaculture sector and use it to develop a sustainable and actionable strategy.
Through a detailed presentation, Dr. Sadek outlined the delegation’s objectives, including assessing water quality, hatcheries, and aquaculture facility management. He further emphasized the need to upgrade farms and hatcheries to achieve optimal water quality, select suitable fish species for cultivation, and enhance workers’ skills in the sector.
To achieve these goals, the delegation employed a thorough methodology. This included conducting field visits to various aquaculture sites, engaging with stakeholders, and collecting water samples to analyze key parameters for aquaculture. The team also focused on improving facility design, management practices, and identifying suitable sites for new aquaculture projects.
Dr. Sadek reiterated that the mission was not only about identifying challenges but also about delivering practical solutions. “We aim to enhance Liberia’s aquaculture sector by upgrading facilities, improving skills, and ensuring sustainable practices,” he said.
The visit by the Egyptian delegation marks a pivotal moment for Liberia’s aquaculture sector. With expertise from Egypt, Liberia is poised to transform its aquaculture landscape, ensuring food security, economic growth, and sustainable development in the years to come.
