The future of aquaculture according to UK Agri-Tech Centre

The future of aquaculture according to UK Agri-Tech Centre – Against the backdrop of growing global demand for food and the need to reduce environmental impact, aquaculture and livestock farming are taking on a crucial role in agri-food innovation. A recent report by the UK Agri-Tech Centre outlines the research and innovation priorities needed to support these evolving sectors over the next decade.

Strategic vision and objectives

The report emphasises the importance of developing resilient and sustainable systems to ensure global food security and the integrated health of people, animals and ecosystems, known as the ‘One Health’ approach. Consultation with over 150 stakeholders, including commercial, academic and institutional representatives, identified priority needs for the livestock and aquaculture industry.

Thematic priorities

The report identifies eleven thematic areas for research and innovation, divided into four strategic themes: one health, sustainable production, resilient food systems and smart agriculture.

  1. Animal health: developing strategies to prevent diseases and improve animal health, reducing the use of antibiotics and improving food safety.
  2. Animal welfare: improving animal welfare practices through the use of technologies such as AI and sensors to monitor animal behaviour and living conditions.
  3. Food safety, quality and nutritional content: ensuring the safety and quality of fish and livestock products, aligning with consumer expectations in terms of health benefits, welfare standards and safety.
  4. Climate smart solutions: implementing agricultural practices that reduce environmental impact, contributing to national and global climate goals.
  5. Productivity: improving productivity through the efficient use of resources, reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and better management of natural resources.
  6. Optimised diets: precise formulation of feeds to support animal growth and health, while reducing waste and environmental impact.
  7. Improved ecosystems and biodiversity: implementation of practices that enhance biodiversity and ecosystem health, contributing to economic and environmental sustainability.
  8. Optimised soil performance: improving the productivity and sustainability of agricultural land through efficient management of soil and animal waste.
  9. Optimised systems: developing integrated approaches to maximise the productivity and sustainability of aquaculture and livestock farming.
  10. Data resources: use of advanced infrastructure and tools for large-scale data collection, analysis and utilisation, improving farm management.
  11. Technology: development and implementation of advanced technologies to improve farming practices and sustainability.

The report Livestock and aquaculture sectors’ 11 innovation priorities identified is a strategic guide to innovation in the aquaculture and livestock sectors for the next ten years. By identifying thematic priorities and outlining a pathway for collaboration between science, industry and government, the centre is committed to promoting sustainable and resilient solutions to ensure global food security.
