Senegal unveils a new USD 219 million roadmap for the aquaculture sector between now and 2032

Senegal unveils a new USD 219 million roadmap for the aquaculture sector between now and 2032 – Senegal’s Agence nationale de l’agriculture (ANA) has announced that it has approved a new roadmap for the development of aquaculture worth a total of 129 billion CFA francs (219 million USD) on 21 July 2023. The plan will be implemented mainly with the cooperation of the US Agency for International Development (USAID) over the next 10 years.

“The ambition is to achieve aquaculture production of 68,000 tonnes by 2032, compared with current stocks of around 1,600 tonnes,”

said Pape Sagna Mbaye, Minister of Fisheries and the Maritime Economy.

The roadmap also envisages increasing local production of fingerlings to 172 million per year and fish feed to 90,000 tonnes over time. In terms of socio-economic benefits, over 50,000 new jobs are expected to be created in the sector, compared with just 2,000 at present.

The authorities also plan to introduce incentives to attract more private operators to the aquaculture sector, set up special economic zones and increase the number of public-private partnerships (PPPs) to develop investment projects as part of the plan.

As a reminder, the new roadmap comes on top of other strategies currently deployed by the executive in the sector. These include the Lettre de politique sectorielle de développement de la pêche et de l’aquaculture (LPSDPA) covering 2016-2023 and the Plan national d’adaptation du secteur de la pêche et de l’aquaculture face au changement climatique à l’horizon 2035.
