Ghana commits to stimulating a sustainable ocean economy – Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo assured a two-day national summit on the ocean economy in Accra on Wednesday that his country was committed to developing a sustainable blue economy for the benefit of all its citizens.
The ocean represents an incredible opportunity to accelerate the development of this West African country and improve the well-being of its people, he said, adding that his government was in the process of developing policies and programmes to ensure a sustainable ocean economy.
“As part of this process, we have launched a national integrated maritime strategy to enable us to chart viable ways to address maritime threats, preservation and management of marine resources to generate substantial national revenue and ultimately improve the standard of living of our people,”
Mr Akufo-Addo said.
Noting that very little capital was being injected into the blue economy, despite an increase in private investment over the past decade, the Ghanaian president stressed the need to secure greater investment in this new sector.
More private funds could be attracted to the maritime sector and marine projects through public-private partnerships, he said.
The summit, which attracted local and international stakeholders, was organised under the theme “The health of our oceans, our prosperity, the security of our planet” by the Ghanaian government’s advisory body on the Sustainable Development Goals, in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme.
